Brown's Nautical Almanac 2026 Edition

Established in 1850 on the south side of the River Clyde in Glasgow, Brown, Son & Ferguson Ltd. soon started publishing books for the sailing ships that visited the city.  In these early days, few publications on maritime affairs were available, and its range of titles steadily grew.  A new and exciting era dawned for the firm with the first issue of Brown’s Nautical Almanac in 1876.

Every year it continues to be completely revised with ongoing care and attention given to its preparation.  Sailors will find a wealth of detailed information, including; Buoyancy, Distance Tables, Marine Safety, Navigation, Stability, Tide Tables for World Ports and Time Zones.  This list is by no means exhaustive, and sailors will find a host of useful information throughout the book.

Brown's Tidal Stream Atlas

In this new expanded edition which has been completely revised using the most up to date information available, from the Hydrographic Dept. The charts show how the tides are running at any hour round the British Isles and the North Sea. It is essential for safe navigation that great care be taken at all times to be aware of and allow for the effects of tidal streams on the performance of a vessel.

This book has been compiled to assist in this matter and its value will he properly accounted for if its content is applied in relation to the navigation and safety of a vessel. There are over 70 larger scale diagrams of tidal streams in the North Channel, Sound of Jura, Pentland Firth, The Humber Approaches and the Bristol Channel.

The International Convention for the Control and Management of Ships’ Ballast Water and Sediments, 2004 (BWM Convention), is concerned with preventing, minimizing and ultimately eliminating the risks to the environment, human health, property and resources arising from the transfer of harmful aquatic organisms and pathogens, through the control and management of ships’ ballast water and sediments.

The BWM Convention also aims to avoid unwanted side-effects from that control and encourages developments in related knowledge and technology.

The 2018 consolidated edition reproduces:
• the updated text of the BWM Convention, including the incorporation of the amendments that have been adopted by the Marine Environment Protection Committee (MEPC) at its 72nd session (9 to 13 April 2018);
• the text of the Code for Approval of Ballast Water Management Systems (BWMS Code), also adopted by MEPC 72;
• four Conference resolutions adopted at the International Conference on Ballast Water Management for Ships held at IMO’s Headquarters in London from 9 to 13 February 2004;
• the up-to-date set of Guidelines for the uniform implementation of the Convention developed and adopted by MEPC, including revised versions adopted by MEPC up to its 71st
session (3 to 7 July 2017); and
• other guidelines related to the implementation of the Convention.

This publication aims to provide an easy and comprehensive reference to the up-to-date provisions and Unified Interpretations of the Articles and Annex of the BWM Convention.

Cargo Record Book for Ships

The Cargo Record Book is required for every vessel undertaking bulk noxious liquid substances cargo and ballast operations. This is required in accordance with regulation 36 of Annex I of the International Convention for the Prevention of Pollution from Ships, 1973, as modified by the Protocol of 1978 (MARPOL73/78).

Code of Safe Practice for Cargo Stowage and Securing (CSS Code)

The Code of Safe Practice for Cargo Stowage and Securing (CSS Code) provides an international standard for the safe stowage and securing of cargoes to promote the safety of life both at sea, and during loading and discharge. The 2021 edition incorporates all amendments up to and including 2020. In particular, this edition includes amendments to annex 13 on Methods to assess the efficiency of securing arrangements for semi-standardized and non-standardized cargo (MSC.1/Circ.1623), appendix 2 on Revised guidelines for the preparation of the Cargo Securing Manual (MSC.1/Circ.1353/Rev.2) and appendix 4 on Revised guidelines for securing arrangements for the transport of road vehicles on ro-ro ships (MSC.479(102)), which supersedes resolution A.581(14), as amended.

Also included in this 2021 edition of the Code are amendments to annex 14 on Guidance on providing safe working conditions for securing of containers on deck.
